Herbert was the son of William and Hannah (nee Crouch) Hinkley. In 1891 they lived at 105 Upper Fant Road. His father was a milkman. In 1901 the family were boarding at Ramsgate where William was a Dairyman. Herbert married Constance Lizzie Franks in 1917. They lived at 145, Bower St., Maidstone, Kent.
